Find some Current or Trending Top Stories or News…try searching what’s trending right now on the news, google, Amazon, yahoo, youtube or facebook. What are people searching today i.e. celebrities, new product releases, movies, sports, music, stocks, economy, etc.

You need to determine just what interests you enough to write about or learn more about? Think of what areas you have skills in or some experience. Also, have you had to overcome a particular challenge or problem?

Do some keyword research to see if your topic is generating enough interest to drive good traffic. In other words, does anybody else care about your topic? Select a main keyword and some related variations also for your article or post.

Research other successful blogs in your market that attract a lot of visitors paying attention to topics and writing styles.

As you begin writing, it is best to get your thoughts down first rather than stopping to edit along the way. Dennis Bird was a superstar defensive lineman for the New York Jets. As a defensive lineman, you regularly take a hit. They usually fall down and get right back up. In a normal season match, Dennis made a routine move to get into a situation to sack the opposite team’s quarterback. As he went forward to make the sack, one of his teammates lunged at the quarterback on the other side. He and Dennis collided with such a huge impact it left Dennis lying on the field, paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told Dennis he’d never walk again. He future looked bleak.

If  you have a background in marketing, or you work with (or have hired) someone in traditional marketing, typically they do things mostly the same way, because it “works”. But what you actually need to be doing is the exact opposite of what all of your competitors in your industry are doing.This article is only the first in a series about small business marketing ideas. But in this article, I’m going to start by challenging a lot of concepts about small business marketing that actually need to change.

I’m here to tell you that when you set yourself apart by doing exactly the opposite of what everyone else is doing, you immediately have a better effect, because people are now paying attention. It’s not the same old, same old – it doesn’t look the same, it doesn’t sound the same, it doesn’t read the same, it doesn’t feel the same as everything else out there.

We’ve had clients in the past who it’s been difficult to push the envelope with, because they are so ingrained in their industry they can’t see past doing something the way that it’s always been done. And when they do try to do something different, that hasn’t been done before, they see really, really great results. So that is where some creativity comes into play obviously, but you definitely want to think outside the box and try to do something different so that you stand out among everybody.

This is a no-brainer, but it’s a huge mistake business owners make. Don’t pay for advertising that doesn’t pay you back! That goes for anything. I’m not going to make any friends with this statement, but I include networking meetings as a form of advertising. And if you’re spending a ton of time at meetings, hoping for new business, and all anyone else seems to care about is getting theirs, stop wasting your time. And if you’re one of those people, stop wasting their time, too.

But also, if you’re advertising in newspapers, on the radio, in the Yellow Pages, or magazines, and you’re not getting any business out of it, just stop! If more money is going out in ads than is coming in from them you are taking a loss – and that’s not what being in business is all about. Don’t wait for something to change, because it never will. Just put an end to it.

Finally, when it comes to small business marketing ideas, you want to keep it simple, and make it complicated. What on earth do I mean by that? Basically, keep your messages simple – in your marketing materials, your website, flyers, whatever – make it easy for people to know what to do in order to do business with you. Have a clear call to action.

People need to be told what action to take – and obviously it needs be much more compelling than that. But when you have a headline, you immediately need to have a call to action. Brochures don’t work anymore – this isn’t the type of marketplace where just reading a brochure is going to change someone’s mind. They need to know instantly – within two seconds – if they’re going to be interested in you or not. And if they’re not, they’re going to move on. So you need to grab their attention and you need to tell them what they need to do next to move forward with you. Keep it really simple.

But when it comes to following up, you want that process to be complicated. Your follow up strategy should include multiple channels of communication, which will allow you to continually build the relationship and sell to them whether they are a client or not.

We’ll get more into mobile and email marketing in the next article – but right now, really think about your current marketing. Are you overcomplicating your messages? Do you have an integrated, dynamic follow up strategy? You should be keeping your messages simple and your follow up complicated.

Eddie Cantor once said, “It takes twenty years to become an overnight success”. In the internet age, entrepreneurs can shorten this window considerably, however, the fact remains that long hours and significant effort are required prior to the launch of a new on-line business. During this pre-launch phase, ebbs and flows in energy levels will have an impact on our overall enthusiasm. One day, euphoria around breathing new life into what was once just a concept. The next day questioning whether the countless hours will ever result in eventual revenue. True entrepreneurs somehow find the self confidence and perseverance to forge ahead until their goals become reality.

I have long been fascinated by the human psyche, and in particular, why some people are seemingly destined for success at a young age while others are bound to be living hand-to-mouth their entire lives? The answer is surprisingly simple – it’s attitude. It was Napoleon Hill who made famous the idea that you could Think and Grow Rich. When you are working on your business in a positive and authentic way, that vibe comes through to your customers. For truly successful people, failure is simply not an option. They have a burning desire to prove something to themselves, the self confidence to believe in themselves and a stubbornness to never, ever quit.

The mental side of running a business is, in my opinion, the most important determinant in whether your new company will succeed. At some point, every successful entrepreneur has had a moment of questioning whether their efforts are truly worth it. In the end, those who persevere are the ones who achieve the highest levels of success. Choosing to stay positive can be difficult, so here are 10 ways to find motivation when you feel yourself starting to lose enthusiasm. These are listed from easiest to hardest.

Basic Strategies

1. Find small ways to give yourself constant positive reinforcement. Configure your workspace with images that inspire, write your goals on your bathroom mirror, or set up your email ringtone with a sound that keeps you on track (I hear the sound of a cash register with each email I receive).

2. Create a Vision Board – I first heard about visualization from John Assaraf in the movie “The Secret” and was sceptical. The concept involves finding images that represent your dreams, goals and ambitions, then turning those images into a poster and keeping it somewhere where you will notice it several times each day. My wife tried it, and I noticed how it seemed to keep her on-track for a half marathon. I decided to give it a shot. My take on this was a little different – I put several PowerPoint slides together and saved them as images. These became my screen-saver and my computers wallpaper. I found the constant reminding was motivational, and eventually found that I was accomplishing each of the goals that I had initially set for myself. Check out the movie ‘The Secret” if you need more help on visualization techniques.

3. Keep a list of the movies, books or quotes that provide you with inspiration. My all-time favorite quote is from the 1989 movie “Dead Poets Society”: “They’re not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they’re destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? – - Carpe – - hear it? – - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary. ”

4. Develop your personal mantra – words have incredible power. Put together a short sentence short sentences of positive, primal affirming words that resonates with your entrepreneurial spirit. Mantras can be short (i.e.”Lets do this”) or wider reaching (“I only manifest the best in my life – prosperity comes naturally to me). Keep a copy of this phrase in your wallet or taped to your computer monitor.

5. Try meditation. Take 10 minutes out of your day and find a quiet place that has no distractions (no cell phone, email, twitter, etc). Sit still, close your eyes and focus only on breathing in and breathing out. If your mind wanders, consciously tell yourself to focus on your breath. In the beginning, 10 minutes feels like an eternity, but with practice you will improve. The mental clarity and ability to focus after meditating is fantastic. As well, taking a small mental break will provide you with a better ability to prioritize various tasks.

6. Go help somebody – online entrepreneurs can spend most of their time alone. Reconnecting with actual living human beings will lift your spirits, and helping somebody else will help you feel encouraged.

7. Do not over monitor your progress. If you are trying to lose weight, is weighing yourself several times a day helpful? Probably not. It is distracting, counter-productive, and has the potential to cause a sense of discouragement. For the online entrepreneur, frequent checking of their AdSense account or Affiliate Sale is just as counter-productive. Checking your stats daily is more beneficial than checking them hourly.

Advanced Strategies

8. Cut the toxic people from your life and make sure the people you associate with are people who give you energy. There are two types of people in the world – those who pump you up and those who bring you down. Whether you recognize it or not, people tend to be a reflection of their peers. Make sure you associate with people who bring out the best in you.

9. Ensure there is complete alignment between your core values and your business goals. If your goals are at odds with your ‘true self’, your subconscious will find ways to derail your success. Finding authenticity is easier said than done, but is a distinguishing character trait amongst highly successful individuals.

10. Maintain balance in your life. Starting a new business will consume all of your time and attention. Eventually, a business plan will emerge, and the initial burst of euphoric energy will subside. At this point, it is necessary to establish boundaries with the business, otherwise other parts of your life (family, friends, health) will start to slip away. Maintaining balance also gives you a chance to reflect on your goals – these will shift over time. Without this introspection, you may find yourself climbing the metaphorical ladder leaning against the wrong wall.

(NewsUSA) – With almost 4 billion resumes distributed annually, there’s growing frustration among job seekers that they are blending into the competitive landscape. While the economy plays a role, some experts believe resumes might also be a reason for this anonymity.

Traditional resumes weren’t a necessity until the 1950s, and their evolution has been marked mainly by enhanced delivery methods. While Facebook revolutionized connectivity, and LinkedIn provided tools for networking, they merely brought the crowd, not the methods to stand out in one. A resume today looks a lot like one from 20 years ago.

Joe Weinlick is VP of Marketing at Beyond.com, a career network of over 30 million members that connects job seekers to employers. They’ve introduced a new tool called Career Portfolio that reshapes resumes, making them more dynamic and visual. On average, recruiters spend 30 seconds on a resume, and Weinlick feels this graphical approach will change perceptions during interviews by allowing recruiters to learn more about candidates, faster.

“If the only resume you have is one you can recreate on a typewriter, you’re missing a big opportunity,” said Weinlick. “We surveyed hundreds of HR professionals in our network, and 55 percent responded that the biggest problem they see is a failure to use a resume effectively. What makes a resume unique to a recruiter isn’t the font; it’s how easily they’re able to scan for relevant skills and experience.”

Weinlick provides three ways to spice up resumes:
1. Information Location. Make sure your best attributes are front and center. The company doesn’t know you yet, so don’t bury what makes you special.

2. De-Clutter. Avoid confusing jargon and overwriting. This is the first chance you have to show your communication skills, and you want to be as clear as possible.

3. Sea of Sameness. Look past the constricting traditional resume format, and prove you can approach problems differently. If you aren’t unique when applying, you won’t be unique when working.

If a lot of your subscribers did not open your emails, you can easily send your email again. Change the title slightly to indicate that you offer a very interesting deal, that will end soon or something to that effect. People will most likely, end up opening one of your emails out of curiosity, after a few attempts.

To promote your website, think about link building. Add a link to your website to a blog post or a post on a social networking website. Create additional content and external web pages that will recommend your website. You can also create partnerships with other websites and link each others websites.

One way to improve your internet marketing is to consider giving away something for free. That’s right, as strange as it may sound, giving away freebies is one of the best ways to attract customers and make money in the long run. Many companies that are worth billions, Facebook for example, are built on the idea of free web space and free tools.

Make use of logos and slogans for your online business site. This is essential brand identity and this helps make you more memorable and identifiable. Many times when people think of a business, they rarely think of the name; they tend to have a more automated remembering of the logo or slogan.

Unless you are selling luxury goods, your internet marketing approach should emphasize the financial utility of your product or service. If you are positioning your brand as a leader in value-pricing and affordability, include words like discount, sale, and bargain. It doesn’t matter what kind of discount you offer; the very prospect of saving even a nominal amount of money is highly alluring to most online shoppers.
